Early punk songs lyrics (1978-1980)

OVERRRUN

(Jane Wiedlin / Belinda Carlisle)
Give us a night where there is no day
We don't wanna see the sun
Give me more friends like the ones I have
So we can overrun
The city
(The state)
The city
(The state)
The country
(The country)
The world
Our time will come

Give us a way to change society
Individuality is not remorse
People need to be of a different variety
So we can overrun
The city
(The state)
The city
(The state)
The country
(The country)
The world
Our time will come

Difference will not matter again
We will over take and descend
Upon
Laws of conformity
Laws of normalcy
Laws of government
Laws of practicality
Give us a certain place in time
Where passiveness is no more
We will have the state of mind
And we will over run
The cities
(The states)
The cities
(The states)
The countries
(The countries)
The worlds
Our time has come

ROBERT HILBURN

(Jane Wiedlin)
Robert Hilburn wants to be young
Bobby Hilburn has his tongue-in-cheek
Pose down real pat
Wonders what it’s like to have fun

Hiburn
It's time to burn
It's burning time
For the Times

Betcha think your really smart
We know better
Your a boring fart
New wave music makes good copy
Tell us Bob, could punk be art

B-MOVIE

(Jane Wiedlin / Charlotte Caffey)
I want to live in a b-movie
I want to say all the corney lines
I want passion and a make believe man
I want non stop romance all the time

I'll exist on the egde of extremes
Hate or love never in between
There's no stopping me now
Feelings gonna be my reason for being

Why can't my life be
Emotion and sentimentality
Soft lights, champagne and you and me

We'll write down our scenarios
Stare into each others souls
Be a rebel just like James Dean
I won't know how to say it

But you'll know what I mean
We'll exist on the edge of extremes
Hate or love never in between
There's no stopping us now
Feelings going to be our reason for being

A handsome love to send me flowers midnight walks in summer showers
I want my life to be
Emotion and sentimentality
Soft lights, champagne and you and me

Living in a b-movie

JUST A NUMBER

No transcription yet for this one.

WE’RE HERE NOW

(Jane Wiedlin / Charlotte Caffey)

Don't accuse us of not caring
We just don't care about you
Don't assume that we never think
You think you know but you haven't a clue cuz

We're here now
We don't need you around
We're here now

Don't make the mistake of criticising
Don't even bother patronizing
We're something that you will never understand
We're so obvious you can't comprehend that

We're here now
We don't need you around
We're here now

We can’t be bothered with the past
You’re the experts when it comes to that
It's useless living for the future
If you don't know how long it will last cuz

We're here now
We don't need you around
Coz we're here now

We're here now

DON’T HANG UP

It's not so bad that I can't see you
To say what I've been thinking about
You're still the toughest boy around
What you've been up to has made me doubt

Don't hang up (hang up)
Just listen
Got to explain the way that I feel
Stay on your end of the line

The telephone's the cowards way
But please listen anyway
I can't be with you anymore
So don't come knockin' at my door

Don't hang up
Just listen
Got to explain the way that I feel
Stay on your end of the line

No, I won't come running back
No, I'll never change my mind
All along I've been a fool
I've gotten smarter
I know your kind

Don't hang up
Just listen
Got to explain the way that I feel
Stay on your end of the line

Go on hang up
Now that you've listened
And I've explained the way that I feel
You reached the end of the line

LUXURY LIVING

(Jane Wiedlin)

Living at the Canterbury
Fighting off the roaches
Like being in a dormitory
Till rental due approaches
I don't know where we'll get the cash
Spent it all on drink
I don't know but sometimes
It's better not to think
Sometimes little I like to think !

Living at the Canterbury
My friends think I'm a fool
Living at the Canterbury
I guess it's pretty cool

Okay living in the city
Whores outside a-posing
Traffic noise a lullaby
Skyscrapers better than blue skies
We can do what we want
We can say what we please
We can be who we want
Being poor is ok by me
Proud I don't have no TV !

Living at the Canterbury
My friends think I'm a fool
Living at the Canterbury
I guess it's pretty cool

It’s cool !

LIVING AT THE CANTERBURY

(Jane Wiedlin)

Okay living in the city
Whores outside a-posing
Traffic noise a lullaby
Skyscrapers better than the blue skies
We can do what we want
We can say what we please
We can be who we want
Being poor's okay by me
Proud I don't have no TV !

Living at the Canterbury
My friends think I'm a fool
Living at the Canterbury
I guess it's pretty cool

Living at the Canterbury
Fighting off the roaches
Like being in a dormitory
Till rental due approaches
I don't know where we'll get the cash
Spent it all on booze
I'm no fool with credit cards
It's better not to think
Sometimes little I like to think !

PARTY POSE

(Jane Wiedlin / Belinda Carlisle)

See me pose
Having so much fun
Champagne glass in my hand
My put on smile
On my painted face
I show no trace of boredom

See me laugh
At your jokes
Your gossiping lips
You look so divine, so divine
In your Fiorucci dress
Your party is finess

Charming, darling

Party pose
Let's pretend
Jet set
Rive Gauche
Party pose
Quite dull
Moet Chandon
Andy Warhol

See me fit
The stylish crowd
Hear the stories
The worldly wise
Exaggerate
We've been around
We've seen it all
We're so profound

See my friends
Walk in the door
Eat caviar, drink
Ash the floor
Party crash patrol
Has come
Party pose
Has just begun

JOHNNY, ARE YOU QUEER ?

(Larson Paine / Bobby Paine)

Johnny what's the deal boy ?
Is your love for real boy ?
When the lights are low
You never hold me close

Well I saw you today boy
Walking with the gay boys
God it hurt me so
Now I gotta know
Johnny are you queer ?

'Cause when I see you
Dancing with your friends
I can't help wondering
Where I stand

I'm so afraid I'll lose you
If I can't seduce you
Is there something wrong ?
Johnny come on strong

Oh why are you so weird boy ?
Johnny are you queer boy ?
When I make a play
You’re pushing me away
Johnny are you queer ?

'Cause when I see you
Dancing with your friends
I can't help wondering
Where I stand

Johnny you're forsaking
A love you could be taking
I wanna give it to you
But you never come through

Oh why are you so weird boy ?
Johnny are you queer boy ?
When you asked for a date
I thought that you were straight
Johnny are you queer ?

Oh Johnny are you queer boy ?
Johnny are you queer ?
Tell me, Johnny are you queer ?
Tell me, Johnny are you queer ?
Johnny are you queer ?

SCREAMING

(Charlotte Caffey / Jane Wiedlin)

No friends - don't want them
Just fans to serve your needs
Make money - they adore you
On subservience your ego's fed

Grey matter
Under grey face
You're so witty
We're so base
Grey matter
Under grey face
You're so witty
We're so base

They're screaming for you, for you
They don't know what's true
What's real
Who cares

Kill this scene with your power
Get your contract - distort the facts
You can use and abuse us
We're so mindless we won't react

Grey matter
Under grey face
You're so witty
We're so base
Grey matter
Under grey face
You're so witty
We're so base

Why bother with morals
When you can rest on your laurels
Why bother with morals
When you can rest on your laurels
Why bother with morals
When you can rest on your laurels
Why bother with morals
When you can rest on your laurels

LONDON BOYS

(Jane Wiedlin / Don Bolles)

Saw your pictures in the 'zines
And you look real good
Pale blank faces - black and white keen
London boys - cigarette lean

London boys
Wish you were
London boys
Wish we were there
London boys
Seem real cool
London boys
Wish you were
London boys
Wish we were there
London boys
Seem real cool
London boys

If we had the money
If we were only rich
We'd take a jet plane get outta this scene
And make the switch

Go go go !

TONITE (early version)

The street lights are shining bright
The billboards are shedding their light
And my crowd's hanging around
Tonite

There's a charge in the air
It's kind of electric out there
And we're all out on the town
Tonite

There you go we should see
We go to where we wanna be
I love thinking ‘bout tonite
There you go we should see
We go to where we wanna be
I love thinking ‘bout tonite

The boulevard's crowded and loud
It's time for excitement right now
There's no better world to be found
Tonite

There you go we should see
We go to where we wanna be
I love thinking ‘bout tonite
There you go we should see
We go to where we wanna be
I love thinking ‘bout tonite

The boulevard's crowded and loud
It's time for excitement right now
There's no better world to be found

FUN WITH ROPES

(Jane Wiedlin)

Bought a cub scout manual

Found my favourite chapter
Turning up the stereo
It's time for fun with ropes

Learned our knots from A-Z
Stole my daddy's belts
We'll make our own fun for free
Having fun with ropes

You tell me that I'm sick (you're sick)
As you strap me to the floor
You know it makes my heart quick
I'll come crawling back for more

Well, I'm collecting coloured cord
No macrame for me
Dim the lights and lock the door
And never set me free

You say that I'm not healthy
You think that I'm a creep
Still you tie your knots so tight
I'm too wrapped up to sleep

You tell me that I'm sick (you're sick)
As you strap me to the floor
You know it makes my heart quick
I'll come crawling back for more
And more and more for ever more

FASHION SEEKERS

(Charlotte Caffey / Joseph August Fleury / Margot Olavarria)

Bland ideas in a borrowed head
They wear their clothes in an empty bed
They'll suck the shirts right off of your back
They'll salivate on your day-glo slacks

They do the Hustle in Italian boots
You see them smile when they get their looks

They're fashion seekers, fashion seekers
They're fashion seekers, fashion seekers

They rob the thrift stores overnight
Open boutiques and hike the price
Taking notes in all of the clubs
While claiming to be one of us

They dance the hustle in Italian boots
You see them smile when the get the looks

They're fashion seekers, fashion seekers
They're fashion seekers, fashion seekers

You've seen it before it's new to them
The last to cash in on a trend
They think that we're too young to know
They wear the trends that we outgrow

(REMEMBER) WALKING IN THE SAND

(George "Shadow" Morton / Jane Wiedlin)
Seems like the other day
My baby, he went away
He went away across the sea

It's been two years ago
That's when my baby go
That's when this letter it came to me

He said that we were through
He'd found somebody new
Oooh, let me think
Oooh, let me think
What can I do?

Oh no
Oh no
Oh no no no no no
Walking in the sand
Walking hand in hand
The night was so exciting
His lips were so inviting

Whatever happened to
The boy that I once knew
The boy who said he'd be true
What will happen to
The life I gave to you

What will I do with my heart now

(Remember) walking in the sand
(Remember) walking hand in hand
(Remember) walking in the sand

BLADES

(Belinda Carlisle / Jane Wiedlin / Margot Olavarria)

I'm feeling artistic
I'm drawing lines
My body is my canvas
I'm making marks in time
Feel the coldness
Feel nothing inside
Caress the smoothness and watch it slide

Uh-oh, here I go
Playing with blades
Again and again
Uh-oh, here I go
Playing with blades
Again and again and again and again

No one seems to notice
That I don't seem to care
It's my decision, my own life
And I don't intend to share
It's not a question of sanity
Or reaction to something said
No desire to be analysed
For fascination with red

Uh-oh, here I go
Playing with blades
Again and again
Uh-oh, here I go
Playing with blades
Again and again and again
and again and again and again

Focus on... Walking In The Sand

As you all know, this song is a Shangri-Las cover, originally released in 1964 :

Some sources claim that the song originally lasted 7 minutes and was faded out sooner to fit radio standards.

Lyrics of the Shangri-Las version :

Seems like the other day
My baby went away
He went away 'cross the sea
It's been two years or so
That's when my baby go
And then this letter came for me
It said that we were through
He found somebody new
Oh, let me think, let me think, what can I do?
Oh no, oh no, oh no no no no no

(Remember) walkin' in the sand
(Remember) walkin' hand in hand
(Remember) the night was so exciting
(Remember) smile was so inviting
(Remember) then he touched my cheek
(Remember) with his fingertips
Softly, softly we'd meet with our lips

Whatever happened to
The boy that I once knew?
The boy who said he'd be true
Oh, what will happen to
The life I gave to you?
What will I do with it now?

(Remember) walkin' in the sand
(Remember) walkin' hand in hand
(Remember) the night was so exciting
(Remember) smile was so inviting
(Remember) then he touched my cheek
(Remember) with his fingertips
Softly, softly we'd meet with our lips

Walking In The Sand is the very first cover the Go-Go's made, and they started performing it in their very early days :

The band had already made the song theirs, taking it very far to the original even though Belinda still sings it quite the same way as the Shangri-Las did.

Lyrics of the Go-Go's version :

Seems like the other day
My baby, he went away
He went away across the sea

It's been two years ago
That's when my baby go
That's when this letter it came to me

It said that we were through
He'd found somebody new
Oooh, let me think
Oooh, let me think
What can I do?

Oh no
Oh no
Oh no no no no no

Walking in the sand
Walking hand in hand
The night was so exciting
His lips were so inviting

Whatever happened to
The boy that I once knew
The boy who said he'd be true
What will happen to
The life I gave to you
What will I do with my heart now

(Remember) walking in the sand
(Remember) walking hand in hand
(Remember) walking in the sand

As you can see, the girls cut out the end of the chorus.

As the Go-Go's sound evolved towards pop-rock, they still performed a very punk-rocky Walking in The Sand in 1981. And they had progressed greatly as musicians :

After the Beautify America Tour, Walking In The Sand was dropped from the setlists. Fans had to wait until the 1990 Reunion Tour to see them play this song again, in a more... melodramatic way.

Then again, no more Walking in The Sand for more than 10 years. But the song came back in the 2000's and has been performed regularly since then, starting with an emotional intro only to blast into an amazing harder-than-ever version :

Has this song been recorded during the Beauty And The Beat sessions ? It seems not, but I can't give up the hope to see a studio version see the light of day...

Many others artists have covered this song :

Louise Goffin, who made the song "No Trespassing" with Charlotte, also covered this song in 1979. If anyone has it please contact me because I would like to get it.

Focus on... Vacation (the song)

Vacation went though a lot of changes from a Textones' song to one of the Go-Go's greatest hits.

Part 1 : Textones (1979)

Written by Kathy. It was released as a single in UK in 1982, after the Go-Go's final version made it big.

Lyrics :

I thought a lot of things about you

I stayed away just thinkin’ ‘bout you

But now I’m away

You had to stay

Tomorrow’s a day of mine that you won’t be in

I tried to say I was just having fun

But I really knew that you were the one

And now that I’m gone

I see I was wrong

I should have known all along that time would tell

A week without you

I should forget

Two weeks without you

And I’m still thinking ‘bout the things that you said

Vacation

Just another loving

Vacation

I won't be lonely

Vacation

Would you think of me ?

I think I'll leave without saying good-bye
I think that you know the reason why

That if I was to stay

You’d picture out  some other way

I’ll never know anyway

Part 2 : Go-Go's first version (1981)

Charlotte and Kathy's reworked version for the Go-Go's. And my personal favourite. Few changes have made in the lyrics.

Lyrics :

I thought a lot of things about you

I stayed away just thinkin’ ‘bout you

But now I’m away

You had to stay

Tomorrow’s a day of mine that you won’t be in

I tried to say it was just for fun

But I really knew you were the one

And now that I’m gone

I see I was wrong

I should have known all along that time would tell

A week without you

I should forget

Two weeks without you

And I’m still thinking ‘bout the things that you said

Vacation

All I ever wanted

Vacation

Had to get away

Vacation

Meant to be spent alone

I think I'll leave without saying good-bye
I think you know the reason why

That if I was to stay

You’d picture out  some other way

I’ll never know anyway

Part 3 : Go-Go's final version

Jane added her contribution to some lines of the song. Its structure is now quite different as well as the lyrics, and the song leans more towards synth-pop than rock.

Lyrics :

Can't seem to get my mind off of you
Back here at home there's nothing to do
Now that I'm away
I wish I'd stayed
Tomorrow's a day of mine
that you won't be in

When you looked at me I should have run
But I thought it was just for fun
I see I was wrong
And I'm not so strong
I should have known all along
that time would tell

A week without you
Thought I'd forget
Two weeks without you and I
Still haven't gotten over you yet

Vacation
All I ever wanted
Vacation
Had to get away
Vacation
Meant to be spent alone

A week without you
Thought I'd forget
Two weeks without you and I
Still haven't gotten over you yet

Which one do you like best ?

Dream Live Album #1 : SOME NOISE TO MAKE (1978)

Let's give in totally to my fantasy addiction ! I like to dream about imaginary albums the Go-Go's could have released in an alternate timeline. This dream discography is made with live bootlegs (I also made one with studio solo stuff but that's for later).

1 - Overrun
2 - Robert Hilburn
3 - London Boys
4 - B-Movie
5 - Fashion Seekers
6 - Just A Number
7 - (Remember) Walking In The Sand

This is basically the quasi full Punk Tarts bootleg. I used the best sources I got, cut the talks and equalized the tracks. Enjoy !
